The Kechemeche Indians were the first to discover the fascinating stones now known as “Cape May Diamonds.” According to local legend, they believed these beautiful crystals held supernatural powers, bringing success and good fortune to those who possessed them.
“Cape May Diamonds” are actually pure quartz crystals, found in a variety of sizes and subtle colors. Their true origin lies far upstream in the upper reaches of the Delaware River. Over time, pieces of quartz break away from veins in the rock and are carried downstream by fast-moving waters. This begins an incredible journey of nearly 200 miles—one that can take thousands of years to complete.
Eventually, these crystals make their way to the shores of Sunset Beach. The strong tidal currents crashing against the hull of the sunken concrete ship SS Atlantus help deposit them along our beach.
When polished and faceted, these sparkling stones can look strikingly similar to real diamonds. In fact, before the development of modern gem-scanning equipment, more than a few pawn brokers were fooled by a well-cut “Cape May Diamond.”
